The KALA Centre for Adult and Continuing Education is an institution established for the advancement of the local communities’ access to education from the basic to continuing education level integrating both formal and informal educational systems.
The educational tools at the centre include publications and audio–visual material.
The information ranges from simple agriculture, technology all geared towards the needs of the communities.
KALA Centre for Adult and Continuing Education was established with the purpose of empowering the community through education, information sharing and distribution and community participation in social development activities especially members of the community who cannot access nformation due to infrastructural limitations.

Bibliographies: A number of bibliographies about women achievers, educational matters, training programmes and success political and gender-based experiences.

Abstracts: Most of the abstracts are based on research work on adult and continuing education, non–formal education, formal education and general educational pedagogical aspects. HIV and AIDS materials are also available.

Publications Produced

Publications include KALA’s own materials, translated into Swahili from English. They focus on HIV and AIDS education, micro–entrepreneurship, human rights and general health; KALA’s newsletters; other publications from different partners NGOs, UNESCO and government agencies.

Challenges and Obstacles in Carrying out the Work

1. Lack of modern data management method to safeguard the materials;
2. Lack of enough personnel to asssit in managing the centre;
3. Lack of equipment to display collected data;
4. A general lack of consistent funding decelerates the meeting of the set objectives, goals and mission of the parent organisation - the Kenya Adult Learners' Association

Strategies and Perspectives to Improve Services

1. Training of the community on proper use of the materials at the centre to boost the communities’ literacy levels;
2. Numerous research which address critical issues facing the local community and the centre is carried out to assess the needs assessment and approaches aimed at developing their own initiatives;
3. Open/establish linkages with other like-minded organisations through internet exchange programmes and e-discussions and face to face interactions is done;
4. The use/capitalisation of locally available resources is done to supplement any external support; and,
5. KALA is dedicating its programmes on expanding literacy from the conservative reading, writing and numeracy to e-learning and the next level in acquiring literacy skills.
